The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Program

Initially, The HERS Program was implemented to protect homeowners and to address defects in equipment installations with historical notes it’s not been done correctly. These measures cover insulation installation and also HVAC system.

When an update was placed to the HERS Regulations, the rating of a home as a system (Whole-House Home Energy Rating) was introduced and implemented. Now you scale a house from 0 to 250 to show its efficiency relative to a reference home built to meet the Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards’ prescriptive requirements.

What is a HERS Index?

The HERS Index is the standard in the industry by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured. It’s also a way for inspecting and also calculating a home’s energy performance.

What does a HERS rating say about a house?

HERS Index measures a home’s energy. It can tell you many details about the home you live in, like how efficient it is and where you need and can make modifications to save energy. Many people don’t know that, but if you’re selling your home, a low HERS Index Score can give you a higher resale price. On the other hand, when you’re buying a home you can save on energy bills if the HERS ratings are low.

How does the HERS Index work?

Get rated will assesses the energy efficiency of your home, then we assigning it a relative performance score. If your numbers are low, then your home is more energy efficient.

  • HERS Index Score of 70 is 30% in a home is more energy efficient than a standard new home
  • HERS Index Score of 130 is 30% in a home is less energy efficient than a standard new home

The rating will consist of diagnostic tests we perform using equipment specialized for HERS testing, a blower door, duct leakage, combustion analyzer/infrared cameras. These tests will determine:

  • Floors over unconditioned spaces
  • Ceilings and roofs
  • Any existing or potential combustion safety issues
  • Attics, crawl spaces and foundations
  • Ductwork, Windows, doors, and vents
  • HVAC system, water heating system
  • Air leakage of the home
  • Leakage in the heating and cooling distribution system

Once we complete the test, a computerized simulation analysis will be used to calculate a rating score on the HERS Index.

HERS Index Score. Lower means Better

If your home have a lower HERS Index scores it means it cost less to run; it also provides home comfort and higher resale values.

Public Access to the RESNET National Rating Registry

Now there is a public registry for checking HERS Testing and Rating. Now you can now access the following information on rated homes:

  • Address of home rated
  • Name of rating company that rated the homes
  • Date that rating was completed
  • HERS Index Score of home
